These organizations offer grants, tax credits, loans and technical assistance for the redevelopment of historic properties.

Below is a list of funds available from these organizations. You can visit each organization's website for more information and details.




Preservation Alliance of West Virginia (PAWV)

Historic Preservation Loan Fund

Eligibility: Individuals, non-profits, and for profit business entities.
Funding used for: The loan fund provides capital, development expertise and technical assistance to property owners who are renovating historic buildings
Fund description: Up to $50,000 for loan guarantees or up to 20% guarantee of the loan amount
Deadline: Year round application acceptance


WV State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)

The Division of Culture and History’s State Historic Preservation Office administers both the state and federal historic preservation programs. It aids federal and state agencies, local governments and the general public in identifying and preserving the physical historic and prehistoric resources of West Virginia.

Historic Preservation Development Grants

Eligibility: State or local government agency, not-for-profit organization, private citizen, for-profit firm or organization, or education institution. Applicant may not be a religious organization.
Funding used for: To assist organizations and individuals in the protection, rehabilitation, restoration, stabilization of a property listed in the National Register of Historic Places or a contributing structure in a National Register Historic District.
Fund description: $200,000 will be available for grant awards; No grant will be awarded for less than $1,000.
Deadline: Annually in March

Federal Survey and Planning Grant (CLG Grant Program)

Eligibility: All Certified Local Governments (CLG) are eligible to compete for CLG grant funds. If other non-CLG funding is available, the following are eligible: State or local government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, for-profit organizations or firms, and educational institutions.
Funding used for: To identify and evaluate properties in an area or by theme to determine whether they may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places
Fund description: Grant funded through Historic Preservation Fund / National Park Service; No grant will be awarded for less than $1,000
Deadline: Annually in October


National Park Service

The National Park Service also offers programs for preservation activities.

Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program

Eligibility: Private investor in the rehabilitation of a historic building; owner-occupied buildings do not qualify.
Funding used for: To encourage private sector involvement in the rehabilitation and re-use of historic buildings.
Fund description: 20% Income Tax Credit and a 10% Tax Credit
Deadline: Available year-round.

Historic Preservation Easement

Eligibility: Property owner
Funding used for: In a typical preservation easement, a property owner places restrictions on the development of, or changes to, the property and transfers these restrictions to a qualified organization whose mission includes environmental protection, land conservation, open space preservation, or historic preservation
Fund description: Federal income tax deduction for the value of the easement, and Federal estate taxes may be reduced. Additionally, some state tax codes provide state tax benefits for conservation easement contributions.
Deadline: Available year-round.

American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) Grant

Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations, academic institutions and local, regional, state and tribal governments.
Funding used for: To protect battlefields and sites associated with armed conflicts, to assist in planning for the preservation, management and interpretation of these sites, to raise awareness of the importance of preserving battlefields.
Fund description: Individual project funding has ranged from $5,000 to more than $80,000; the average grant is $32,000.
Fund information: Deadline: Available year-round.

Historic Surplus Property Program

Eligibility: States, counties, municipalities, and other governmental entities.
Funding used for: Historic surplus properties are “federally-owned historic buildings that are no
longer needed by the Federal government are declared surplus by the General Services Administration.” There are currently no surplus properties in WV at this time.
Fund description: Acquire a surplus property at no cost if the property is listed in, or eligible for listing in, the National Register of Historic Places. Deadline: Available year-round.


National Trust for Historic Preservation

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a privately funded nonprofit organization that works to save America’s historic places. They offer several grants highlighted below. For tips on how to apply for grants from the NTPF, visit the NTPF How-To page.

National Trust Preservation Funds (NTPF)

Eligibility: Organizational Level Forum members or National Main Street Network members; Public agencies, 501(c) (3), and other nonprofit organizations.
Funding used for: Planning and education projects that stimulate public discussion, enable local groups to gain the technical expertise needed for particular projects, introduce the public to preservation concepts and techniques, and encourage financial participation by the private sector.
Fund description: Grants generally start at $2,500 and range up to $5,000.
Deadline: Annually in February, June and October

Hart Family Fund for Small Towns

Eligibility: Organizational Level Forum members or National Main Street Network members; Public agencies and nonprofit organizations in towns with a population of 5,000 or less are eligible.
Funding used for: Preservation projects in small towns; planning and education projects that stimulate public discussion, enable local groups to gain the technical expertise needed for particular projects, introduce the public to preservation concepts and techniques, and encourage financial participation by the private sector.
Fund description: Grants generally range from $2,500 to $10,000.
Deadline: Annually in May

Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation

Eligibility: Organizational Level Forum members or National Main Street Network members; Public agencies, 501(c) (3), and other nonprofit organizations. Individuals and for-profit businesses may apply only if the project for which funding is requested involves a National Historic Landmark.
Funding used for: Preservation projects geared toward saving historic environments in order to foster an appreciation of our nation’s diverse cultural heritage and to preserve and revitalize the livability of the nation’s communities.
Fund description: Grants generally range from $2,500 to $10,000.
Deadline: Annually in May

Henry A. Jordan, M.D. Preservation Excellence Fund

Eligibility: Organizational Level Forum members or National Main Street Network members, Mid-Atlantic Region (includes WV).
Funding used for: Preservation projects that facilitate positive dialogues about protecting the environment stimulate development of local and state policies that protect the cultural landscape, heighten public awareness of issues relating to the livability and sustainability of communities, encourage innovative partnerships and approaches to open space conservation and historic preservation.
Fund description: Grants up to $5,000.
Deadline: Annually in May

Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors

Eligibility: Organizational Level Forum members or National Main Street Network members; Public agencies and nonprofit organizations. Individuals and for-profit businesses may apply only if the project for which funding is requested involves a National Historic Landmark.
Funding used for: Preservation, restoration, and interpretation of historic interiors.
Fund description: Grants range from $2,500 to $10,000.
Deadline: Annually in May

Emergency / Intervention Funding [links to an email to request help]

Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations and public agencies.
Funding used for: Emergency situations when immediate and unanticipated work is needed to save a historic structure, such as when a fire or other natural disaster strikes.
Fund description: Emergency grants typically range from $1,000 to $5,000. Contact them via the email in the link above if you believe your project qualifies for this type of funding. Please note: emergency funding is very limited.
Deadline: Available year-round.

Peter H. Brink Leadership Fund

Eligibility: Organizational Level Forum members or National Main Street Network members; Public agencies, 501(c) (3) and other nonprofit organizations.
Funding used for: Travel costs and mentor honorarium, to build the capacity of existing preservation organizations and support leadership and effectiveness of staff.
Fund description: Grant reimbursement maximum of $2,500.
Deadline: Available year-round.


Tax Credits

Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program

Eligibility: Private investor in the rehabilitation of a historic building; owner-occupied buildings do not qualify.
Funding used for: To encourage private sector involvement in the rehabilitation and re-use of historic buildings.
Fund description: 20% Income Tax Credit and a 10% Tax Credit
Deadline: Available year-round.

Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits

Eligibility: Private owners of certified historic residence
Funding used for: Expenditures necessary to carry out material rehabilitation of historic private residences
Fund description: 20% WV State Income Tax Credit
Deadline: Available year-round.


National Coal Heritage Partnership

National Coal Heritage Partnership Grant

Eligibility: non-profit organizations, and public and governmental organizations, economic development authorities, and educational institutions.
Funding used for: To support community efforts to preserve, interpret and promote coal heritage resources
Fund description: Grant fund; awards range from $500 – $10,000.
Deadline: Annually in February
